Never has the power of IP been stronger, increased OTT/ IPTV rights have emerged as increasingly important and that is a unique advantage of the A+E Networks global catalogue. Investment in production will continue to rise with a focus on high-quality unscripted and scripted shows. In APAC, we will ramp up productions in Korean dramas and entertainment shows, Japanese documentaries, original unscripted shows in India and new shows in SEA.

HD/4K

20+ hours of 4K and HD content has been produced in Japan, with an additional 10+ hours planned this year. Last year saw the production of Crossroads, a six-part series shot in 4K that followed the building and grand opening of the largest integrated resort in the Indian Ocean.

Local Production

In Japan we are producing two local productions, Tokyo Legacy, which charts the development of Tokyo since the city hosted its last Olympics in 1964. War of Innocents is a documentary that focuses on Japanese civilians who were impacted by War. In Korea, we will be premiering our first two Korean dramas in 2020, and we will also premiere Treasure Hunters – a show that brings the artifactual genre to Korea for the first time as well as a new co-production with JTBC, Knowledge of Meal.

In Japan, we partner with SkyperfectTV for our 4K productions. In Korea, we are co-producing Knowledge of Meal with JTBC and Treasure Hunters with KT Skylife TV.

From the producers of The Curse of Oak Island® comes a new series that looks at alleged UFO encounters to sudden disappearances to evil possessions. Series host William Shatner attempts to discover truth behind the most mysterious events to be reported. Episodes/length: 8x1 hour

Treasure Hunter

A Korean-style artifactual programme building on the best of our global hits, such as Pawn Stars and Storage Wars. Each episode follows two distinct Korean celebrity treasure hunters hoarders, Joon Park and Defconn, as they scavenge several homes with the aim of finding valuable items lying around. Tokyo Legacy

This one-off special will look at the city’s rapid development from the aftermath of WWII to becoming the “economic animal” of the world. Tokyo Legacy will explore the fascinating and at times tumultuous history of Japan with a focus around the turning point that was 1964 and the road to the 2020 Olympics. Episodes/lengths: 1x90 mins

There are ongoing discussions on how to adapt these stories to suit local cultures and demand. • Escalation in digital-first formats, e.g Tripping: a road trip where likes (social fuel) translate into actual petrol. Thailand is the first global launch for this concept. With an upsurge in VOD services, content is being consumed differently. There is a greater appetite for short-form content and digital extensions of existing formats. • With the current challenging economic environment and reduced advertising budgets, we foresee productions going two ways: into the tried and tested brands that deliver, like MasterChef and Big Brother, which are likely to attract sponsorships.
