The romance between the Philippines’ two dominant free-TV broadcasters – ABS-CBN and GMA – and Mexico is blossoming, with remake rights to at least five drama titles from the Philippines’ in play as 2016 draws to a close. The production relationship builds on an affinity for telenovelas in both markets, and the Philippines’ vibrant domestic drama produc- tion industry offers a large choice. New sales are also the result of a concerted effort by both broadcasters to explore new markets. “International demand is steadily growing,” says GMA Worldwide Inc vice president, Roxanne Barcelona. GMA has sold remake rights to four titles, including The Little Heiress (aired in the Philippines as Munting Heredera), which is being pro- duced by Telefilm Atlantico S.A. The drama, about a grandmother’s search for her heiress, is the first GMA scripted drama to be produced in Latin America. The other titles sold this year are for Spanish versions of My Destiny (a woman who’s willing to sacrifice everything, even her romantic aspirations, for her family), The Other Mrs Real (a man in love with two women marries them both), and The Half Sisters (woman bears two children – one by her husband and the other by a former boyfriend who raped her). Mexican production company Altavision Producciones is making The Other Mrs Real and My Destiny. ABS-CBN has sold remake rights to The Promise (a man chooses between his true love and a woman his mother approves, setting off a chain of events that impacts generations). The show was acquired by Global TV Content and the deal closed in 2016. The formats follow a robust business in finished series in Asia and around the world, with both ABS-CBN and GMA reporting rising drama sales not only in Latin America but in Canada, Turkey and Africa as well. Eastern Europe is another target market. “Our target audience are not Filipino expats,” Barcelona says, adding: “Rather, we want to reach the local audience of the coun- tries we sell to”. – Janine Stein 64 Genre: Talent show Broadcast on: Skynet (MNTV/CH9) Date: 12 Nov 2015-8 Apr 2016 (S1), Dec 2016 (S2) Slot: Performance show on Fridays, 9pm; result show Saturdays, 8pm (S1) Producer: FremantleMedia Asia Myanmar’s Got Talent S3-4 Genre: Talent show Broadcast on: MRTV-4, CH 7 Date: 5 June-28 Aug 2016 (S3), 2017 (S4) Commissioned: Forever BEC-Tero Rights: FremantleMedia/Syco Distributed by: FremantleMedia International X Factor Myanmar S1-2 Genre: Singing reality show Broadcast on: MRTV-4/Channel 7 Tx details: 10 Sept-11 Dec 2016 (S1), 2017 (S2) Commissioned by: BEC-Tero Distributed in Asia by: Fremantle- Media International Produced by: FremantleMedia Rights: FremantleMedia/Syco PHILIPPINES Long a lively participant in Asia’s formats scene, the Philippines had 27 titles on air in 2016 or commissioned for 2017, including 8 from Endemol Shine and 5 from FremantleMedia.
