Khazanah challenge: video vs vegetables

That the sprawling Iskandar Malaysia Studios (IMS) complex just over the causeway from Singapore has been for sale for a few years has been no secret. When Singapore-listed media outfit, G.H.Y Culture & Media, outlined its purchase deal in a disclosure to Singapore’s Stock Exchange, it wasn’t the sale that stood out, but the amount G.H.Y. agreed to pay for what appeared to be an 80% stake in the Malaysian governmentowned facility.

About US$8 million for all that? When the shock-horror shrieking over the multi-part deal died down and Malaysia’s sovereign wealth fund, Khazanah Nasional Berhad, had issued a clarification statement of its own, a few things were clear (or at least a bit less confusing): G.H.Y is partnering with IMS current management in an 80/20 ownership agreement of a new entity that will manage the 10-year-old facility, built at a cost of about US$130-million. The total price tag of approx US$10 million, based on IMS audited accounts as at 31 Dec 2022 as well as business prospects, doesn’t include a single doorknob or blade of grass or any of the

The good news for formats in Asia is that 2022 marked the first growth in the number of formats commissioned/on-air in five years. But even if volume is up 16%, adaptations in the region remain well down on the formats heyday of 2018.

land/infrastructure that makes up the 124,000+ square feet facility. G.H.Y said IMS’ net asset value at the end of Dec 2022 was approx RM32m/US$7.3m.

Khazanah said that the new arrangement was in the best interests of the domestic and regional production ecosystem. Of course it would say that, having put the facility on the block in the first place and all. But they could, to be honest, turn the whole complex over to, say, hydroponic farming and fill the place with vermiculite or coconut coir. And, even if food security is a worthy issue, what good would that do for Asia’s film and video production industry?

Even if we support the buyout, the G.H.Y/management move is not a magic wand that will make all things right again. The new team will have to deal with everything the old team had on its plate: a critical film incentive scheme run by Malaysian government agency, Finas, that hasn’t always worked the way it should; perceived or real value of shooting in Iskandar compared to, say, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Thailand, Australia, or even, if MNC’s new Movieland facility starts welcoming outside crews, Indonesia. We’re told that the old IMS pricing was not always that attractive, and it has been difficult to attract crews/talent to Iskandar/Johor Bahru (JB). Even if Malaysia remains cheaper than Singapore, putting a crew together in JB is more expensive than in KL, one producer told us. But G.H.Y has big production plans, and IMS CEO Rashid Karim knows every inch of this terrain, so there’s cause for optimism.

As it stands though, the sale is by no means a done deal. Step one, with a price tag of about RM8.84 million/US$2 million, is expected to be complete by 15 April – after this issue went to press. If that goes through as planned, the rest will take a while. Hopefully it won’t fall apart, but if it does... Hydroponic lettuce anyone?

Formats Outlook: Asia

The good news for formats in Asia is that 2022 marked the first growth in the number of formats commissioned/on-air in five years. But even if volume is up 16%, adaptations in the region remain well down on 2018’s heyday, and while there are wins, these are patchy as the sector reshapes.

Malena Amzah looks at the current state of formats in Asia in ContentAsia’s latest Formats Outlook.

Asia’s formats environment largely lurched through 2022, with highlights here and there; some big wins for scripted adaptations; an abundance of innovation as producers and platforms were forced to do a whole lot more with less; much talk and even more wishful thinking about co-developments; the ongoing disappearance of the once-mighty regional linear commissions; and ambitious quests for international super-formats in the vein of Idol, Got Talent, MasterChef and Masked Singer

Compared to 2021, when numbers dropped to seven-year lows, the reality doesn’t look as dismal as it might. And not all formats developers and IP owners were equally hit by budget cuts and streaming shifts. The Philippines, for instance, had its best formats year in five years in 2022. India, in another example, enjoyed unprecedented activity in drama formats, driven by domestic and global steaming demand. Out of Japan, Nippon TV’s Mother continues to lead Asian scripted formats internationally, with seven adaptations so far, including this month’s premiere of the 13-episode Castilian Spanish version, Heridas, on free-to-air

channel Antena 3 in Spain. In Malaysia, early audience data analysis indicates that the April debut of episode one of Double Vision’s local version of All3Media International scripted format, Liar, outperformed Astro Ria’s 9pm slot average across audience groups by a giant margin.

But, even if formats volume in the region is up on 2021, 2022 isn’t going down as a stellar year across the formats board, especially not when compared to Asia’s formats heyday of 2018, when adaptations in the region hit 337. Looking back, even 2019 wasn’t that bad, ending the year with 312 adaptations.

The best news of 2022 is that overall formats activity reversed the annual downward slide that ContentAsia’s Formats Outlook research has tracked since 2019. We counted 200 adaptations commissioned/ on air in 18 countries in 2022, up 16% from 172 in 2021. The 200 excludes 25 titles that were announced in 2020/21 but haven’t been made and there’s nothing to indicate that they ever will be.

At 200, this is the first increase in volume in five years.

2022’s adaptations in the region were led by drama with 44 titles, followed by game shows with 41 and singing-related formats with 40.

Singing-related titles included teen/romance series, Sing Again, the Thai adaptation of CJ ENM Korea’s Sing Again Hera Gu; Fremantle’s game show, Family Feud Mongolia, by StarTV; and ITV Studios’ singing competition, The Voice Kids Philippines season five, commissioned by domestic programmer, ABS-CBN.

Cooking-related formats trailed at 21, followed by 16 reality formats, nine fashion/beauty shows, eight dating series, eight talent and six variety titles. Bringing up the rear were three talkshows, two factual adaptations, and two movie remakes.

and India in 2022. The three markets have led rankings for the last five years, from 2018 to 2022.

Thailand took top spot in 2022 with 33 titles, followed by Vietnam with 30 and India with 27. In total, the three accounted for 45% of the formats commissioned/on air in Asia in 2022.

Thailand’s best year was 2018, when 70 titles were either commissioned or on air. But it also means the Thai market has plummeted most dramatically, shedding 19 in 2019 to end the year at 51. This dropped to 37 in 2020 and 21 in 2021.

In 2022, Thailand’s most popular genre was drama (13 series), followed by game shows with eight and cooking formats with six.

Vietnam, which has largely held second place for the past five years, came in second in 2022 with 13 game shows of the total 30 titles/seasons commissioned/aired during the year. These included All3Media International’s Beat the Internet and two seasons of Crush Vietnam (S2 & S3) from NBCUniversal Formats. Both titles were commissioned by Vietnam Television (VTV), which accounted for more than half of the formats greenlit in Vietnam for 2022.

India, at number three on Asia’s formats charts for 2022, continues to be dominated by scripted adaptations. Of the 27 titles, 13 were drama series, with a marked preference for thrillers and crime stories. These included Gaalivaana (the Indian adaptation of BBC Studios’ thriller, One Of Us) and Duranga – Two Shades of a Lie, adapted from Korea’s Flower of Evil

yet produced (and with no commitment to a production time line). Five of the six are movie remakes from Philippines’ ABS-CBN Film Productions; rights announced in Oct 2021 by India’s Global One Studios. The titles are Barcelona: A Love Untold, Can’t Help Falling in Love, Crazy Beautiful You, She’s Dating the Gangster and The Hows of Us.

Nine of the 27 adaptations in India in 2022 were reality/social experiment formats from Banijay Rights: Fear Factor – Khatron Ke Khiladi S12 and multiple dialect versions of Big Brother on Viacom18’s Colors, streaming platform Disney+ Hotstar and channels Star Vijay and Star Maa. The rest of India’s 2022 count involved two talent show formats, one cooking title, one game show and a movie remake.

In the first three months of 2023, India added another four adaptation deals, putting it in line lead the formats board in Asia this year.

The Philippines followed India, Thailand and Vietnam in 2022 with 21 adaptations. Mongolia had 14, Indonesia 14 and Malaysia 10. Korea and Japan had nine each, with Nepal at eight, China at seven, Cambodia

and Myanmar at five each, Singapore at four, Sri Lanka at three, and Hong Kong at one. Bangladesh and Taiwan registered none in 2022.

Philippines programmers and producers smashed the country’s records in 2022, going from 14 in 2021 to 21 in 2022. In 2019, the Philippines reported 16 adaptations, up from 2018’s 14.

Singing and game show formats thrived in the Philippines in 2022, with five titles each. These included season two of MBC Korea’s Masked Singer Pilipinas, commissioned by TV5, and The Wall Philippines season two on GMA Network. The game show aired in Aug-Dec 2022 on GMA7. A new season (15x60 mins) of The Wall Philippines has been greenlit (platform not disclosed), contributing to Banijay Rights’ position as Asia’s top formats distributor in 2022 with 47 adaptations on its books for the year.

ITV Studios followed with 31 and Fremantle with 17. Korea’s CJ ENM and NBCUniversal Formats had 15 each, BBC Studios had 12 and MBC Korea had nine. They were followed by All3Media International with seven, SBS Korea with six, KBS Korea with five, Fuji TV Japan and Warner Bros Distribution with four titles each and Can’t Stop Media, Paramount Global Content Distribution and Workpoint Group Thailand with three each.

Laugh out loud

Indonesian director Timo Tjahjanto talks about fear, horror, musicals, laughs lost in translation and the difference that streaming has made to his life as a fi lmmaker.

Best known for his work in action and horror, Indonesian filmmaker Timo Tjahjanto jumped into new territory with comedy, The Big 4, produced by Frontier Films, which is part of Indonesia’s Screenplay Films’ cluster.

Less than two weeks after its 15 December 2022 premiere, the Netflix original rose to #1 spot on the streamer’s global top 10 list for non-English films with almost 20 million hours viewed for the week, and Rotten Tomatoes was calling it “definitely one of the best action films of the year”. Over its three weeks on Netflix’s top 10, the film was watched for a total of 41.6 million hours around the world, and appeared on the top 10 lists in 65+ countries.

The Big 4, written by Tjahjanto and Johanna Wattimena, is about a by-the-book detective who investigates the death of her father and follows a clue to a remote tropical island, only to find out his true identity as a leader of a group of assassins.

Tjahjanto frequently collaborates with Kimo Stamboel, whom he met at college in Australia; the filmmaking duo are known as ‘The Mo Brothers’. Together, they have made films such as Rumah Dara (also known as Macabre), Killers and Headshot.

You’re well-known for making horror films and darker stories. What motivated you to make The Big 4, which is a much lighter story? “It’s part of me trying to improve as a filmmaker because I think a great filmmaker can sometimes be a person who’s really good at making one specific thing, but another type is also one who is not afraid of doing something

unfamiliar. People have asked me if I am thinking about making a musical one day and I say, why not? I watched [Indian feature] RRR and it was awe-inspiring, as well as the latest Matilda remake from Netflix. Yet, I would say my urge for violent content is too strong. For example, this next [as yet unnamed] project with Netflix is going to be a darker piece.”

Comedy is a huge part of The Big 4 and humour is difficult to translate. When you were scripting the film, were there certain things you kept in mind knowing that the film would ultimately screen on a global platform? “A lot of the humour in The Big 4 is improvisational because two of the actors are actually stand-up comedians. Subconsciously, I’m always thinking, ‘this is so funny’. As an Indonesian, you’ll laugh. But this might not translate well to some white guy in Mississippi, for example, because it’s such a cultural thing. It’s just the risk of trying to do comedy. A lot of comedy comes from the fact that it is such a local thing, a trend of the moment or a folklore. For example, one of the characters in The Big 4 swears in a way that only people from eastern Indonesia will understand. So that will definitely be lost in translation.”

Indonesia is a high-interest market for many streamers. Has the number of projects actually exploded for you in the last few years, or is it just a lot easier to find money to make stories now? “The biggest challenge was always – before Netflix and other streaming services – when you have an idea but you don’t have the faith of investors or studios.

I don’t want to be comfortable just making Indonesian films. I want to do something I’ve never been able to do before, like making a film in Hollywood.
Timo Tjahjanto

They’ll say, “this is just not really what the audience wants”. But you never know when you don’t try. I think Big 4 is pretty commercial, but let’s say for example, Indonesian films like Photocopier or Dear David I think those are very interesting offerings that you will never get in the cinemas. Photocopier is so thematic in terms of what’s happening nowadays... Streaming services allow these kinds of stories to be told, where in a million years, unfortunately, we will not see [these] in the cinema, especially in Indonesia. Right now, the only things that are doing well theatrically are horror films and romantic comedies. I’m optimistic that with streaming services, we have a good future.”

Are you hoping for hybrid theatrical/streaming distribution for your movies, with short windows or festival premieres before streaming releases?

“Of course. As a filmmaker, you always dream that your film is going to be shown theatrically because that’s the whole experience. But I have to think about all the advantages that I didn’t have before. My previous films have been distributed worldwide, but the distribution itself is such a painful process. Let’s say, my first film, horror feature Rumah Dara (2009). People buy it for Argentina, then Mexico, Malaysia and every deal is different. With The Big 4, the moment it came out, people were reacting to it in real time.

I think that’s the beauty of [streaming]. I remember when The Night Comes For Us (2018) first came out, there was a video of a whole dorm of college boys watching together and they were all screaming and holding beers. That’s the kind of experience that you want.”

You’ve had a very international career, with projects in Hollywood and also a Train to Busan remake in progress. In a sense, the whole world is open for you; how are you choosing your next few projects?

“I do have several Hollywood-based projects in development but it is important for me to keep my collaboration with Netflix going. The Big 4 isn’t the end of it; I have more stories to tell from these characters. It’s just the beginning. Netflix is in a sense, like, ‘whenever you want to rock and roll, let’s do it’. The same goes for this project that I’m about to do. The collaboration process has been really encouraging, creatively, so I don’t want to let go of that. But I do have these American projects where I feel it’s a good proving ground because I don’t want to be comfortable just making Indonesian films. I want to do something I’ve never been able to do before, like making a film in Hollywood. I’ve been through some preparations with them and the way they do things is very different. I think that’s what you have to be as a filmmaker – constantly learning.”

Do you think film is the best format for you to tell the stories you want to tell right now, or do you think you might move into episodic formats?

“I am interested and we do have one project that Netflix Indonesia is slowly developing – a thriller series. But right now, I feel the level of commitment that is required for a film is less demanding than doing a series because a series is a lot of responsibility.” – by Sara

Eye of the beholder

Smriti Mundhra’s The Romantics, is an ode to Hindi cinema. The fourpart Netflix docu-series explores the life and cinema of filmmaker Yash Chopra and Yash Raj Films, the studio he set up in Mumbai in 1970. But The Romantics is actually a journey into the story of Hindi cinema from just before partition in 1947 to current day India. From Dharamputra in 1961 to Dilwale Dulhania Le Jaayenge in 1995, the series offers an insight into an industry that has held its own against Hollywood for more than 100 years.

Your work (A Suitable Girl, Indian Matchmaking, St Louis Superman) straddles many different worlds. Is it because of diversity intrinsic to you as an American-Indian? “My work reflects the many facets of my identity. I am an Indian. I spent a lot of time in India, so I have never felt like a foreigner there. But I am also a diaspora kid. Most of my upbringing was outside of India, in the U.S. So I have an outsider’s perspective on my culture as well. It is a different perspective on what it means to be a first-generation immigrant and child of the diaspora and having to navigate my identity in every space that I walk in. I am also an American. Raised in this country and the issues that shape my life here are also important to explore artistically. All my work reflects some aspect of that experience. It is a huge advantage. I can look at a story through multiple lenses.”

Is your lens American and then you bring the Indian in... “In non-fiction I see the world as an Indian first... I talked to a lot protagonists for Indian Matchmaking, many NRIs (Non-Resident Indians). When I talk to them and understand their thoughts, I feel very different, feel there is a layer to this whole topic that I understand differently from other NRIs. Because I have spent a lot of time in India, and I have witnessed arranged marriage in different forms and fashions. You cannot look at it just in terms of its broadest strokes. There is a nuance, and that informs my work.

“I have more patience and tolerance for these institutions that definitely need evolving. But I have also grown up with my grandmother who married at 13 and what her life was... mother was married at 16, came to America, became an entrepreneur and the head of the household. Then there is me, who has lived a life beyond my grandmother’s wildest dream.

“I have seen that evolution in one lifetime. That level of cultural change doesn’t happen so easily. But it has happened.

“So when I hear people say that ‘oh arranged marriage is so regressive..’ and I say, yes, it is regressive, there is gender imbalance in the way everything is set up. And if you see it through everything I have seen through the eyes of people I have spent time with, homes I have spent time in, my family in India, you see aspects of this tradition that may seem more regressive on face [value], there is a reason behind

it and there may even be a progressive reason behind it. My approach when it comes to my work is that we shouldn’t be too quick to judge. There are a lot of contours and nuance to these topics that you cannot capture in a tweet and you cannot see it if you are judging all the time.”

What was your professional epiphany? “The big turning point for me was when I took the leap to directing and also simultaneously took the leap into documentaries and non-fiction, I did that out of necessity because the industry in the West was very inhospitable to someone like me. The gender parity in Hollywood is atrocious. You do not see women directors at all. And it is not hospitable to the kind of stories I want to tell. Making my first documentary, A Suitable Girl (2017), was an opportunity for me to take my storytelling into my own hands. That pivot happened out of necessity but it awakened something for me that was really profound. One, I found my home, my calling in non-fiction storytelling. Two, I found my voice as a storyteller/director. I took seven years to make my

first film. I went into it pre-OTT. When I came out of it, the industry had radically changed. Content was going global, non-fiction storytelling was on the rise and OTTs were growing. So I found a lot of opportunity in the years after my first film released. The market met me where I wanted to be. Indian Matchmaking was a huge turning point for me.”

What is the issue with female directors in the U.S.? “Fewer than 2% of all studio directing opportunities – TV, films, web – are directed by women. That is an absolutely mind-numbing statistic to me. I know women are particularly better equipped to be directors – it needs leadership, organisation and sensitivity to material. But non-fiction is different. In the last few years, non-fiction has started emerging as a real viable alternative. The barriers to entry are low with non-fiction, therefore you see more female directors. It is all about access. It is not that we can’t compete at that level, but it is that there is some force that keeps us out and when that force is not there, we thrive.” – by

Worlds between

Pakistani series Barzakh, for South Asian streamer Zee5, is a family drama that plays out in a mystical world between life and death, fantasy and reality. Writer/director and indie filmmaker, Asim Abbasi, talks about dream states, prophesies, masculine dysfunction, intergenerational trauma, and moving away from “hooky” binge effects.

When Barzakh premiered in the International Panorama category at Series Mania in the French city of Lille in March this year, Asian premium drama took one more step forward in a global TV landscape dominated by Korea. The only South Asian selection at Series Mania this year, Barzakh (aka Limbo Land) was written and directed by U.K./ Pakistan filmmaker, Asim Abbasi (Cake, Churails, Count Abdulla).

The series, which Abbasi describes as more art house than mass market, is a family drama that plays out in a world between life and death, fantasy and reality. Set in Pakistan’s Hunza valley, Barzakh stars Fawad Khan (Ms. Marvel), Sanam Saeed (Cake) and Salman Shahid in a story of love, loss and reconciliation created by Abbasi as a Zindagi original for South Asian streaming service, Zee5.

Barzakh revolves around a 76-year old patriarch (Shahid) who runs a tourist resort in a mythical mountain valley. When he announces his third marriage to the love of his life – a woman the villagers believe is long dead – he sets in motion events that will change his family and the valley forever.

The series is produced by Waqas Hassan and Shailja Kejriwal, Zee Entertainment Enterprises’ chief creative officer for special projects, who describes herself as “an enabler”, particularly for stories that take

chances and that aren’t “more of the same”. Kejriwal is keen on more stories from Pakistan, as well as alliances between artists in India and Pakistan. “There is so much we have in common,” she says, adding that the creative reasons to back shows like the controversial Churails and Barzakh far outweigh reasons – including political considerations – not to.

Ahead of the Series Mania global premiere, the London-based Abbasi spoke to ContentAsia about the new series and what it means to him as a filmmaker.

You open the series with a quote from the Book of Nowhere – “Respect the sacredness of the earth you were born into, for the story of your soul is inseparable from the magic of your lands”. What is the Book of Nowhere? “Barzakh is set in a fictional place, known as the Land of Nowhere. The Book of Nowhere is a prophetic book about these lands. Core elements stem from all religions... talking about the world of images, the dream state, where boundaries are porous, where the living and the dead, spirits and bodies, freely intermingle with each other. There are lots of names for it – Barzakh is one.... all of these things are incorporated in the Book of Nowhere”.

contentasia april 2023 18
Barzakh

Why were you so intent on setting the series in Pakistan’s Hunza Valley? “We had a bunch of options but Hunza felt right. Mountains, especially those high enough so that you can’t see over them, are generally mythical places... We brought those elements into the story. Also, I wanted this to be very specifically about Fall. The story happens over four days, in the lead up to the patriarch going up the mountain to marry... Thematically, it was very important to me that the series had a striking Autumn feel, with falling leaves and the coming of Winter, where everything dies before being reborn.”

Where did you start creating Barzakh? “The story was born in Covid. I had done Churails and wanted to focus on something smaller and intimate, but set in a world that feels universal and big... a family drama set in a world of magic realism, that speaks about the universe and universal consciousness, rather than about a family and its dysfunction.”

For Barzakh, you shifted gears in a big way from the female-centric focus of Churails “I wanted women in this show, but I wanted women not to be the focus. I wanted the focus to be on the father and the two sons and the dysfunction that comes from masculinity and those relationships. Women here are almost not human, otherworldly creatures. The women have greater knowledge, greater powers, and men are the ones who are real and less in touch with their feelings. The

idea of grounding with fathers and sons and inter-generation trauma was important.”

What storytelling boundaries does Barzakh push? “It moves away from the ‘hooky’ binge effect. It’s more expansive thematically. I’ve attempted to talk about themes that mainstream shows don’t talk about, and not to keep [the story] moving through editing. It has a third of the shots that were in Churails. In terms of filmmaking and cinematography, it’s closer to films.”

What gears do you have to change to go from Barzakh to directing British comedy, Count Abdulla, for Fudge Park and ITVX? “I don’t know myself. Everyone used to make fun of me that I can’t direct anyone else’s writing. The script came to me… I don’t particularly think I have a great sense of humour, but there’s something really good about being part of a British-Asian show like this... done with so much insanity, set in a vampiric world... It would have been a shame not to do it. I was given complete freedom to make the show as crazy as I thought it should be. It’s visually closer to Churails and a gear-shift from Barzakh. It makes me feel that I’m not repeating myself.”

Do you still see yourself as a feature filmmaker? “What I’ve loved about TV series is that it allows me to flesh out the backstory so much more... I approach series like a really long film.”

Trends & Outlook 2023

The rising demand from streaming services for originals is even higher. The need to remain relevant in their local language, which in turn will increase engagement and add viewers.

Game shows are just as popular, but we are receiving more requests from clients to accommodate brand-led ideas since the marketers want more for their buck and their exposure is beyond standard linear or streaming. They are aggressively pushing for more product integrations, customised promotions, meet & greet, contests and quizzes on social media such us YouTube, Facebook, Instagram, etc.

More AVOD deals and the growing popularity of FAST channels. We see this trend continuing in valuedriven and price sensitive territories in Asia. We are confident that the AVOD business will continue to thrive.”

LEGO Masters South Korea (Blockbuster: Brick Wars of Geniuses), was the winner at the Asian Academy Awards 2022 as ‘Best Adaptation of An Existing Format’

(National Winner in Korea)

MasterChef Singapore was the winner at the Asian Academy Creative Awards 2022 as ‘Best Adaptation of An Existing Format’

(National Winner in Singapore)

All Together Now Malaysia, nominated at the ContentAsia Awards 2022 as ‘Best TV Format Adaptation (Unscripted)’ in Asia.

Top shows are…

For our finished tapes, our top three programmes for 2023 are The Sixth Commandment, Wild Isles with Sir David Attenborough and the US adaptation of SAS called Special Forces: World’s Toughest Test

In terms of formats, we are very excited to represent new titles like Big Interior Battle, Date My Mate and Blow Up.

Asia focus in 2023

We must adapt to the changing landscape. The recent mergers and acquisitions amongst major studios have reduced the size of the market. This year will indicate what that means for content distributors as the larger studios will explore their own IP and we will need to re-evaluate our priorities.

Given this consolidation, we need to focus on every opportunity – big or smallto make up the volume. For us this could be territories like South Korea where we licensed Lego Masters or a smaller territory like Mongolia where our format Killer Karaoke will be hitting the floors. We lead the way on local language versions such as Big Brother India which is produced in six languages, Survivor India which was made in Tamil.

With finished tapes suffering at the hands of local original offering, we will concentrate on format sales, especially scripted formats e.g. the third season of Arya will release in India which is an adaptation of our drama, Penoza.”

Trends & focus in 2023

While coming to the end of the pandemic, we realised that the world has fundamentally changed. The media industry is no longer the same. Consumer behaviour is being transformed, from the way we work and learn, to shop and entertain. The adoption of digital has accelerated to a point that the SVOD market seems to be saturating, and streamers are now competing in the FAST/AVOD space, and focusing more on programme quality over quantity in their offering. Linear TV will continue to play its traditional, but vital role, during this media revolution in Asia.

Since last year, Boat Rocker has expanded our production to include scripted content and feature documentary, adapting to changes in the media industry, and becoming a versatile global content creator and provider.

Our primary focus in Asia in 2023 is to extend our reach to broadcasters and streamers beyond our usual factual entertainment and animation segments.”

Our primary focus will be unscripted content. Unscripted makes it easy for viewers to jump into a programme, any time throughout the series. And with so many subgenres (i.e. true crime, dating, renovation, etc.), people can explore new worlds.

True Crime series are extremely popular now. Regardless of where the crime occurred or previous awareness of the crime, if the story is compelling, the series will have an audience. To feed viewers’ appetite for true crime, we have new series such as Manifesto of a Serial Killer, Sleeping with Death and Living with a Serial Killer to offer.

We’ve also found that audiences have been gravitating towards documentaries that explore the people and events that have shaped history and affected the world. Our upcoming documentaries range from the best F1 racers in Villeneuve and Pironi to the unbelievable story of Pan Am flight 73 in Hijacked and the wildlife documentary turned heist in The Great Rhino Robbery

Other unscripted subgenres we’re focusing on include ballroom dancing in Ballroom Dancing Queens; house cleaning and purging in The Gentle Art of Swedish Death Cleaning; and the newest Below Deck series, Below Deck Adventure, which showcases the lives of the staff and crew working on a superyacht.

Our partnership with CJ ENM in Korea has helped expand our slate with series such as Bargain, a six-part adaptation of director Lee Chung-hyun’s 2015 short film of the same name, revolving around a group of strangers who gather at a remote motel with ulterior motives – seeking to bargain, with more titles to come in 2023. Demand for dating shows is growing, as we see a huge increase in the pick up and production of more daring formats. We are incredibly excited to share our new relationship show Stranded on Honeymoon Island, from the creators of Married at First Sight – an innovative new hybrid take on the relationship and survival genres.

We are seeing more and more high end drama adaptations – as viewers seek out local content with the same high production values of the big global scripted series, such as our high-concept psychological drama Plan B, starring Patrick J Adams, a new adaptation of a successful scripted format.

There is still big demand across Asia for socially conscious factual entertainment content with a heart that looks to make a real impact, for example our compelling social experiment Old People’s Home for Teenagers – which has already sold to both Hong Kong and Korea.”

A wildlife and nature brand that targets audiences aged 25-64, and offers viewers the chance to experience the natural world in stunning 4K.

ZooMoo (linear, SVOD, catch-up, FTA, AVOD, FVOD, FAST)

• AVOD/ FAST – Consumption of ad-supported video streaming services beyond YouTube will surge as price-conscious viewers are able to find more premium ad-supported content available. Agencies and advertisers will get on board in a bigger way attracted by ability to micro-target audiences watching on the big screen

• Production: Quality over Quantity

– broadcasters and streamers are adapting to a tougher economic landscape in 2023. Streamers like Netflix & Disney+ are ordering fewer new scripted shows but seeking higher quality titles that can make a real impact. There will still be room for less expensive unscripted series, but the middle ground of somewhat premium yet fairly expensive productions will dry up

• Artificial Intelligence (AI) – AI is increasingly being used to improve customer experience, ad optimisation and to extract customer insights. Expecting more broadcasters, streamers & platforms to utilise AI to help align their marketing, sales and subscriber service goals”

A pre-school channel that incorporates the STEAM education – Science, Technology, Environment, Arts and Mathematics, in an interdisciplinary and applied approach, making learning fun all the time!

Who’s who...

Asia-Pacific

TV5MONDE is the world’s first French-Language network, broadcasting eight dedicated General Entertainment channels (USA, Latin America, Europe, Maghreb & Middle-East, Africa, French-speaking Europe, Asia and Pacific) as well as two thematic channels (Lifestyle and Kids), to over 420 millions homes worldwide, with subtitles in 13 languages. It also offers a global AVOD service – TV5MONDEplus – on top of its specific regional offers designed to meet the needs of the local audience.

Linear Television Channels In Asia

TV5MONDE broadcasts 3 live 24-hours channels in Asia:

TV5MONDE Asie and TV5MONDE Pacifique, 2 general entertainment HD channels with a wide variety of subtitled primetime films and TV series, in-depth coverage of international news, live sports events, high-quality documentaries and discovery magazines, kids’ programmes, exciting game shows... TV5MONDE Asie covers Central Asia, Indian subcontinent, Greater China and Southeast Asia and comes with subtitled in English, French, Vietnamese and Russian. This channel is also provided in a SD format with burned-in English subtitles, while TV5MONDE Pacifique covers North Asia, Australia, New Zealand, and the Pacific Islands with subtitles in English, French, Japanese and Korean. TV5MONDE Style is a channel entirely dedicated to the “art of living”; The French lifestyle HD programming covers the whole Asia-Pacific region with one encrypted feed with DVB subtitles in English, traditional and simplified Chinese.

Target Audience

Our channels are designed for the entire family thanks to our wide range of content (cinema, drama, documentaries, entertainment, live sports events and kids programmes).

The TV5MONDE channels are also the meeting points between French culture lovers, francophones and French language learners.

Trends & Outlook 2023

1 – OTT market has increased

The OTT market has increased significantly in APAC, and most Pay Tv operators are struggling to compete.

2 – More asian original content

The rise and success of K-Content, in Asia and the rest of the world, have created new habits beyond traditional US content. Thanks to this success, the new local VOD champions (as well as their international counterparts) are investing in local content, creating additional pressure on Pay TV operators and forcing them to compete in this field.

3 – Return of linear TV on streaming services

With so much available content to choose from, especially for people with multiple OTT services, this “burden of choice” has turned a laid-back experience into a sometimes timeconsuming and stressful one. Choosing what you want to watch may take longer than watching it if you ever reach a decision. Therefore, in line with what we have seen during the lockdowns in most countries, viewers return to their old laid-back streaming habits after the initial overconsumption of their preferred VOD content. Therefore, as popular as FAST has become in the US in a short period, Linear TV on streaming services will surely be the new way to go in APAC..”

Linear/on-demand

TV5MONDE Asie, TV5MONDE Pacifique and TV5MONDE Style are both linear channels and available on-demand on apac.tv5monde.com.

Streaming

TV5MONDE Asia-Pacific channels are also available through a subscription-based TV everywhere service available on the company’s local website - apac.tv5monde.com - and via Apps free to download on the Google Play/Apple local stores. The online OTT service gives access, in all countries of the region, to all three live channels, as well as two dedicated news and kids TVs and a full On Demand service. The interface is available in 4 languages (French, English, Korean, and Japanese) and offers subtitles in French, English, Vietnamese, Korean, Japanese, simplified and traditional Chinese.

Asian channels/services

TV5MONDE’s content comes from our PBS shareholders from France, Canada, Belgium, Switzerland and Monaco, as well as in-house productions and co-productions.

Content

We offer an average of 510 hours of fresh content monthly on our GE channels (TV5MONDE Asie & TV5MONDE Pacifique). TV5MONDE Style, the lifestyle channel, is closer to the industry standards for Pay TV with 1 664 hours of fresh content per year.
