    April magazine - out now!

View profile for Janine Stein, graphic

Thailand has taken a hard look at soft power – and has cherry-picked leaders from across the media industry to collaborate on an ambitious new plan. Among other national goals, the soft power strategy will put Thai television series and films on a Korea-style global trajectory. The new scheme, under a single integrated body modelled upon Korea’s Kocca and Taiwan’s Taicca, could have as much as THB 1 billion/US$27.3 million a year for film alone. Hopes are that this will, in turn, feed back into the country’s economy and international profile. This will fuel further investment into the cultural environment that will exert an even bigger influence on audiences around the world. That will, in turn… How will all this work? ...the full story is in ContentAsia's latest magazine, published for #miptv The digital version of ContentAsia's April magazine is at https://lnkd.in/gazHZHvd 💥 #contentasia #thaidrama #thaifilm

Taiwan has set in place its most determined plan ever to cement the country’s creative industry place on the global stage. If there is one uncertainty, it’s the election in January 2024, which could, if things don’t go according to the current plan, change everything. But for now, the so called “black tide” initiative is a powerful force, leaving no doubt about the current administration’s well-funded commitment and support. From the beginning of 2024, there's NT$10 billion/US$318 million over four years in the 1+4 T-content plan (aka “Black Tide”) to provide comprehensive support for the development of Taiwan’s cultural content industry in six major aspects of culture and the arts. We’re at Booth L23 at the ATF, with a lovely print magazine and chocolates. Come visit! #contentasia

Countdown to the ATF 2023 in Singapore and we're all about what's going on in Asia, what the industry is hoping for, what it most fears... you know, the usual. This year, hopes are topped by opportunities for Asian IP monetisation around the world. Fears? The economy, & that streaming platforms won't commission/acquire as much as they used to. Plus, a whole lot of unanswered questions about everything from real-life Korean dystopia and what happens next, to the impact of the election on Taiwan on what currently looks like a funding happy-days, to whether (or not) (1) Max will launch in SE Asia; (2) Disney+ will restart its original production in Asia; (3) and what Amazon/Prime Video's plans for Southeast Asia look like.... Lots of what we think and other industry plot points in our December magazine. The digital link is here: https://lnkd.in/gdzDPYRX. Link in IG bio. The print magazine will be distributed at the ATF in Singapore. For all of you on your way to Singapore, safe travels and we look forward to seeing you soon. And if we don’t see you there, all the best wishes for a happy Holiday season and the best possible 2024. #contentasia

Going to the movies is looking pretty good for Thai broadcaster and producer, BEC World right now. The listed media company’s second movie, Minds@work horror film “Tee Yod”, grossed THB100 million/US$2.8 million in its first three days since its 26 Oct release and is boosting hopes for the company’s fledgling theatrical strategy. That's following a return of about 250% on its US$75,000 investment in first film, "Bua Pan Fun Yap", which released at the end of 2022. ⭐️ #latepost ⭐️ Catching up after Mipcom, which resembled the old days in some ways, in others not so much. The best take-away is that the enthusiasm for third-party acquisitions is back +... and few could be happier to have those all-doom-conversations in the rear view mirror. China was also back in a big way; hot and cold running mainland companies, with top billing for Tencent Video. Tencent VP & CEO of Tencent Video, Sun Zhonghuai, showcased the best of the "Three Body" sci-fi series alongside other impressive clips, gigantic digital engagement numbers, and some well-worn platitudes about how good content transcends borders. Afterwards, I was warned to "look not only at what he said but at what he didn't say"... I'll be digging into that later. More soon... including my conversation with Sung Kang about “The Ride Life with Sung Kang”, his new series with Beach House Pictures' Jocelyn Little and Donovan Chan and Insight TV; and with Sarah Haasz, producer/co-showrunner of K-pop inspired tween dramedy series, "Gangnam Project", for CBC Kids and CBBC, and distributed worldwide by Federation Kids & Family. Among other things, both talked about their Korean heritage, life with hyphenated identities and how this impacts their work. Meanwhile... posting stories from our pre-mipcom newsletter. Happy weekend all! 💥 Link in IG bio for the full newsletter. Also at https://lnkd.in/gnrvSXfP #beachhousepictures #insighttv #gangnamproject #tencentvideo #wetv #mipcom #contentasia

Last few days of ContentAsia Summit 2023 On Demand... “Every year the U.S. studios produce an abundance of high-quality TV series. There’s a lot of supply in the market to meet our needs. Ultimately, what the three of us [Rock Entertainment, Rewind Networks/Hits, KC Global Media Asia] want to do is to choose the best programme, the best content, for our viewers. Although there might be some overlap sometimes, eventually each channel has its unique personality and DNA that drives our decisions.” ⭐️ Celine Ong, Director, Program Planning & Strategy, Rock Entertainment Group Only at www.contentasiasummit.com #contentasiasummit #contentasia #rockentertainment
