Malaysian platform Astro has stepped into the public service entertainment space with a new original physical reality show that “celebrates the strength, courage, and unity of Malaysian youths”. "Jaguh Rakan Muda", which premieres this week, is a project with the country’s Youth and Sports Ministry (KBS).
Hosted by national athlete Mat Redho, the series will air on Mondays at 9pm on Astro’s flagship entertainment channel Astro Ria; at 9.30pm on Astro AEC; and at 11:30pm on Astro Vinmeen. Episodes will also be available for streaming on Astro GO and sooka.
Contestants between the ages of 13 and 30 from diverse backgrounds were selected through nationwide auditions. The winning team will be crowned Jaguh Rakan Muda and win a grand prize of RM100,000/US$21,000.
“At its core, Jaguh Rakan Muda is a space for Malaysian youths to challenge themselves, grow, and unlock their potential,” Astro said during the launch.
The show is structured around 10 lifestyle pillars — Rakan Demokrasi (democracy), Rakan Litar (motorsports), Rakan Aktif (active lifestyle), Rakan Bumi (environment), Rakan Digital (digital), Rakan Ekspresi (expression), Rakan Muzik (music), Rakan Mahir (skills), Rakan Niaga (entrepreneurship), and Rakan Prihatin (care and welfare).
“The series reflects Astro’s commitment to homegrown content that celebrates our youth by showcasing participants who embody courage, teamwork, and determination to inspire and unite Malaysians,” the platform said.
“Our goal is to build a dynamic and resilient youth community that contributes meaningfully to the nation’s growth and unity… Jaguh Rakan Muda is one of the many ways we bring that vision to life,” Minister of Youth and Sports, Hannah Yeoh, said.
Astro’s chief content officer, Agnes Rozario, said the platform was “focused on producing original, high-quality content that inspires positive action across different communities”.
