Netflix this morning confirmed the Korean live action adaptation of “Solo Leveling”, starring Byeon Woo-seok as the low-tier e-rank hunter, Sung Jin-woo, who gains extraordinary abilities after a near-death experience.
The new series expands the franchise, which started as a web novel, expanded into a webtoon and later became an anime series (produced in Japan by Japanese anime studio A-1 Pictures) and a video game.
Among other things, Netflix is promising an expanded universe and the skills of its global VFX team as well as to introduce viewers “to fantastical dungeons and uniquely powerful monsters, setting a new standard for live-action adaptations”.
Since its debut on KakaoPage, Solo Leveling has firmly held its place as its No. 1 web novel and webtoon, gathering 14.3 billion cumulative views worldwide.
The series will be co-directed by Lee Hae-jun and Kim Byung-seo, known for their work in films like “Ashfall”, “Like a Virgin”, “Castaway on the Moon”, “My Dictator” and “Cold Eyes”.
Producers are Kakao Entertainment and SANAI PICTURES.
Netflix hasn’t confirmed a release date.
