Streaming platform Youku has started promoting the Hong Kong/Cantonese version of the Israeli scripted format, “Your Honor”. Release dates have yet to be confirmed for the premium series, which stars Nick Cheung Ka Fai, Myolie Wu, Joseph Zeng, Nina Paw Hee-Ching and Eddie Cheung Siu Fai.
The Hong Kong series is about Qin Yu (played by Nick Cheung), an upright judge, who hides the truth about his son and the son of a gangster boss. Vengeance results in a bloody storm. Myolie Wu plays policewoman Tang Xuan, who sticks to justice and pursues the truth.
The domestic Hong Kong release could be on free-TV channel Viu TV, which is owned and operated by PCCW’s Hong Kong Television Entertainment Company Limited (HKTVE). Hong Kong’s free-TV channel, TVB Jade, or TVB’s streaming platform myTV Super, are the other possibilities. Neither Viu nor TVB have confirmed a pick up yet.
Mainland China distribution is likely to be as a finished-tape import, and best bets at the moment are that the series will go out in the original Cantonese with simplified Chinese subtitles.
The adaptation, announced in February this year with a broadcast platform expected to be confirmed by March 2025, is by William Lau’s two-year-old Hong Kong-based indie Ladder Ideas. The series is the first of a slate of three new premium TV shows Lau has in production.
The “Your Honor” format deal was brokered by Boat Rocker’s SVP, Strategic Partnerships, Asia, Henry Or, according to the Feb announcement.
The series Chinese name – 刍狗之血 – translates to “Blood of the Straw Dog” in English. This may draw from a metaphor found in ancient Chinese philosophy where a “straw dog” refers to a ceremonial object once treated with reverence but later discarded without sentiment. The show’s English name has not been confirmed.
