
Netflix unveiled three new Japanese series today, promising to “capture the imagination and excitement of future Japanese storytelling” as it celebrates its 10th anniversary in Japan.
The three titles are a drama, a comedy and an anime series.
Anime title “STEEL BALL RUN JoJo's Bizarre Adventure”, the next chapter in Hirohiko Araki’s saga set in the 19th century and following the first cross-continental horse race across North America. The series is directed by Yasuhiro Kimura. Further details will be showcased on 23 September.
“Straight to Hell”, directed by Tomoyuki Takimoto and Norichika Ohba, stars Erika Toda as Kazuko Hosoki, Japan’s most infamous fortune teller, whose hidden past is revealed. The series streams in 2026.
“Did Someone Happen to Mention Me?” is a comedy starring Koji Yakusho as a once-famous actor who returns home only to find the world has completely forgotten him. Written by Kankuro Kudo and produced by Aki Isoyama, who were behind “Let’s Get Divorced” and “Extremely Inappropriate!”, the series is also scheduled to stream in 2026.
Directors are Fuminori Kaneko, Takuya Sakaue and Atsushi Watanabe. Japan features in another new Netflix series – international crime thriller, “Road” (working title) – showcased today. "Road" follows two detectives as they track a series of gruesome cross-border murders, beginning in Tokyo when a disfigured body is found with a blood-inked message written in Korean. Based on webcomic “Blue Road”, “Road” is directed by Han Jun-hee (“Weak Hero Class 1”). The blended Japan-Korea cast includes Son Suk-ku (“A Killer Paradox”), Eita Nagayama (“Monster”), and Kim Shin-rock (“Hellbound”).
