Indian news platform LiveMint has shot holes in the cord-cutting narrative in a report that says the “streaming boom stalls as [free broadcast/cable] television remains dominant”.
The 10 November report highlights streaming services’ focus on metro audiences, and quotes Ormax figures showing a 298 million TV base against streaming’s 110 million, with a significant viewership overlap.
491 million people watch both and 565 million don’t watch any video content at all.
LiveMint also quotes execs from regional streaming platforms, including Odia-language streamer AAO NXT, who say paid subscriptions are currently limited to smaller, younger and urban audiences.
Others highlight limitations in access to smartphones, internet connectivity or smart TVs across rural India, and repeat the age-old intelligence: India is not a one-size-fits-all market.
