Malaysian media company stock prices right now are not for the faint-hearted. But the country has a record-breaking superhero in “Ejen Ali”, which has beat “Ne Zha 2” to become the top animated film ever; Astro has gone all idol in boy band “Alpha”, the result of a reality search that set hearts afflutter and plugged into Astro’s integrated content/business strategy; and new creative alliances with regional neighbours continue to emerge. The country also remains a distribution priority for regional and international channels and apps, which are being picked up by traditional and non-traditional platforms in the shift to streaming. Plus, ever-eager to keep Malaysian members happy (but not necessarily that eager to restart their own original production), global streamers are acquiring rights to local shows from domestic distributors. We’re watching iQiyi, which has returned Dinesh Ratnam as senior managing director for Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, and, of course, Viu, which may not shout as loudly as it could for its Malaysian originals but they’re very definitely there.
