Japan dominates GagaOOLala’s 2025 BL rankings; Chinese-language dramas sweep top three BL series, Taiwan and Japan lead GL list
09 March 2026

Japan dominates GagaOOLala’s 2025 Global Top 10 boys’ love (BL) series list, taking six of the 10 spots, although Chinese-language titles claim the top three positions on the Taiwan-based global LGBTQ+ streamer. Japan’s dominance signals a shift in the competitive landscape as producers refine storytelling, broaden themes and tap into international demand. The strong showing also underscores Japan’s increasingly confident role in the BL ecosystem, a space historically associated with Thailand’s prolific production pipeline. Thailand’s "Doctor’s Mine" represents the country’s established BL export pipeline, while Korea’s "Secret Relationship" leads the Korean titles with a more emotionally restrained, cinematic style. GagaOOLala’s 2025 GL list reflects a genre that is expanding both geographically and creatively, with Taiwan and Japan leading the charge while other Asian markets begin to develop their own GL storytelling ecosystems.

Japan dominates GagaOOLala’s 2025 Global Top 10 BL Series, taking six of the 10 spots on the international LGBTQ+ platform’s ranking of the year’s most popular boys’ love (BL) titles although ceding to Chinese-language titles for the top three places. Chinese series "Revenged Love" was #1, followed by Hong Kong’s "Desire" and Taiwan’s "Secret Lover."

On GagaOOLala’s GL (girls love)/lesbian series rankings, Taiwan and Japan dominate. At #1 is Taiwanese drama "Fragrance of the First Flower" S2, reinforcing the strong reputation the original series built for sensitive, character-driven storytelling. The sequel’s success reflects both the strength of Taiwan’s LGBTQ+ production environment and the demand for more mature, emotionally nuanced GL narratives.

Overall, GagaOOLala’s 2025 GL list reflects a genre that is expanding both geographically and creatively, with Taiwan and Japan leading the charge while other Asian markets begin to develop their own GL storytelling ecosystems.

Top BL series "Revenged Love" signals the continued appetite for Chinese-language BL storytelling despite regulatory constraints on overt same-sex narratives across much of the region. Many recent productions lean on coded storytelling, emotional intensity and online fandom engagement, allowing the genre to maintain strong cross-border appeal even when domestic distribution conditions are complex.

Hong Kong’s "Desire", ranked second and billed as “the world’s first omegaverse m-preg drama series”, reflects the territory’s long screen tradition of exploring diverse relationship themes. Hong Kong BL titles often lean toward more mature storytelling and urban settings, distinguishing them from the school-centred narratives that used to dominate.

Taiwan’s "Secret Lover" in third place highlights the island’s continuing leadership in LGBTQ+ storytelling in the Chinese-language market. Taiwan has become one of the most consistent producers of openly queer narratives in Asia, supported by progressive social attitudes and a strong track record of BL and LGBTQ+ drama that resonates with global audiences.

Together, the three titles underscore the diversity of the Chinese-language BL landscape, each of the markets bringing different creative freedoms, tones and storytelling approaches to the genre while serving a shared regional and international fan base.

But the real story in the 2025 rankings is Japan’s dominance.

Japanese entries include "Our Youth", "When It Rains, It Pours", "School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close To", "At 25:00, in Akasaka" S2, "Love Sea: The Home for Lovers" and "Love in the Air – Premonition of Love".

Japan’s dominance signals a shift in the competitive landscape as producers refine storytelling, broaden themes and tap into international demand. The strong showing also underscores Japan’s increasingly confident role in the BL ecosystem, a space historically associated most strongly with Thailand’s prolific production pipeline.

The top five Japanese series – Our Youth, When It Rains, It Pours, School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close To, At 25:00, in Akasaka S2 and Love Sea: The Home for Lovers – illustrate the breadth of Japan’s BL storytelling. These balance introspective romance with everyday realism and character-driven narratives – hallmarks of the genre in Japan.

At the softer end of the spectrum is Our Youth, which leans into themes of emotional awakening and first love. The title reflects a familiar strength of Japanese BL: understated storytelling that focuses on internal conflict and quiet character development rather than overt melodrama.

When It Rains, It Pours follows a similar emotional register but signals a slightly darker tone, suggesting stories shaped by complicated relationships, vulnerability and the messy realities of adult life. Japanese BL increasingly explores these more mature emotional landscapes, expanding beyond school-set romances.

In contrast, School Trip: Joined a Group I’m Not Close To draws on slice-of-life storytelling rooted in everyday social situations. The long, almost conversational title reflects a distinctly Japanese narrative style that emphasises awkwardness, self-reflection and gradual relationship building.

The second season of At 25:00, in Akasaka highlights another key development in the BL ecosystem: successful titles evolving into ongoing franchises. The continuation indicates sustained fan demand and the rise of BL properties as repeatable IP.

Finally, Love Sea: The Home for Lovers points to the genre’s continued focus on romantic escapism, pairing emotional storytelling with visually appealing settings that enhance the intimacy of the narrative.

Taken together, the titles highlight Japan’s distinctive approach to BL: quieter, character-driven storytelling that contrasts with the higher-energy, fan-service-oriented style often associated with Thai productions.

Even as competition intensifies across Asia, Thai BL productions remain among the most export-ready titles, benefiting from established talent pipelines, experienced producers and loyal fandom.

Thailand’s sole entry on the GagaOOLala 2025 top 10 BL is Doctor’s Mine, which reflects Thailand’s continued strength in polished relationship-driven dramas.

The 10-episode 2025 series is about medical and engineering students whose lives become entangled through fake relationships, secrets and competing loyalties.

Second place on the Thailand top five goes to Season of Love in Shimane, an eight-episode cross-cultural entry that signals a growing trend of Thai productions exploring international settings and collaborations. Such projects broaden visual appeal and narrative scope while targeting global audiences already familiar with Thai BL storytelling.

Love In The Moonlight, ranked third, leans into the genre’s emotional core, combining romantic tension with the character-driven arcs that have become hallmarks of Thai BL hits.

Fourth-ranked The Bangkok Boy brings the narrative back to an urban Thai setting, reflecting another recurring strength of the country’s BL sector – contemporary stories rooted in recognisable local culture and youth lifestyles.

Rounding out the Thai top five is "My Golden Blood", which illustrates the genre’s willingness to blend romance with more stylised or genre-bending elements.

GagaOOLala’s top Korean BL show is "Secret Relationship", a title that reflects one of the most common narrative anchors in Korean BL – hidden or complicated romances shaped by social expectations and personal secrecy.

Second-ranked "Tide of Love" suggests a more lyrical and introspective approach, consistent with the cinematic style often associated with Korean BL.

"My Bias is Showing", in third place, hints at the growing intersection between BL narratives and Korea’s wider pop culture ecosystem. References to “bias” culture (drawn from K-pop fandom terminology) reflect how Korean BL increasingly taps into existing fan communities and youth culture, broadening the genre’s appeal among international audiences already engaged with Korean entertainment.

Fourth-ranked "Ball Boy Tactics" leans into several familiar themes – sports rivalry and teamwork; hidden feelings within male friendships; personal growth and self-acceptance; the pressures of youth and competitive environments. The sports setting provides both physical intensity and emotional stakes, allowing the series to explore how relationships evolve under pressure.

The story centres on a high school volleyball team and the relationships that develop around it. One of the key characters is a ball boy working closely with the players, placing him at the centre of team dynamics, locker-room politics and emotional tensions that arise within the group. What begins as competitive friction evolves into a slow-building romantic storyline – a common narrative approach in Korean BL dramas.

Completing the Korean top five is "Thundercloud Rainstorm", whose dramatic title suggests a more intense emotional register. Based on a web novel and produced for Korean streaming platform Wavve, the eight-episode series is about an innocent and increasingly desperate illegitimate son abused by his half-brother at their father’s funeral, who ends up relying on his cousin.

Japanese titles account for a large portion of the GL rankings, including "AYAKA is in LOVE with HIROKO", "Chaser Game", "The Nipple Talk", "Call Me By No Name" and "AYAKA is in LOVE with HIROKO 2nd STAGE".

Together they illustrate Japan’s increasingly confident approach to GL storytelling, ranging from workplace romances and character-driven dramas to lighter, comedic explorations of relationships. The presence of both the original "AYAKA is in LOVE with HIROKO" and its follow-up season also highlights the emergence of GL franchises with sustained fan demand.

Another Taiwanese entry, "Apple My Love", adds to Taiwan’s strong showing on the list, reinforcing the territory’s position as one of Asia’s most consistent producers of openly queer narratives.

Thailand, long a powerhouse in boys’ love production, also appears in the GL rankings with titles such as "Love Senior" and "Unlock Your Love". While the Thai GL sector remains smaller than its BL counterpart, its growing presence suggests producers are increasingly willing to expand beyond male-focused romance to explore female-led queer stories.

The rankings also include "Behind the Scene of Fragrance of the First Flower S2", illustrating the depth of audience engagement with successful GL titles and the appetite for additional content around popular series.

GagaOOLala’s rankings are released as the platform hits 5 million members around the world.

Since launching in 2016, LGBTQ+ content has evolved from a niche category into a powerful cross-border screen genre with dedicated global audiences. Streaming platforms have accelerated that expansion, pushing Asian titles to viewers far beyond their home territories.
